Crown Range Cellar was born on the back of a napkin over a glass or two at a local Queenstown restaurant overlooking the mountain ranges. The dream was to make small volumes of award winning wine, grown in a variety of famous wine regions throughout New Zealand.
Most well known for our Pinot Noir, it all started with our flagship wine – the Signature Selection Pinot Noir from Gibbston – made by master winemaker Grant Taylor. Having perfected his craft in Burgundy and the Napa Valley, Grant returned to his native Otago in 1993 and was one of the pioneers of Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir. 36 years in the making, the Signature Selection Pinot Noir is a celebration of Grant's craft and his deep connection with Central Otago.
After three years experimenting with different parcels of land, winemaking techniques and after plenty of mistakes, we finally felt ready to show the wine to the world. In 2015 we entered the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London for the first time and that year we won the Trophy for Best Pinot Noir, competing against thousands of wine entries from 90 different countries.
Every year since then we have collaborated with top wine makers to produce limited volumes of these exclusive wines. The latest collaboration is with Patrick Léon, the world famous winemaker who worked with Baron Phillipe de Rothschild from 1985 until 2000. Today he is making a limited run of Syrah for Crown Range Cellar.
